Art Process

#1

Sketch

I start up with a regular sketch, I use reference for poses / props / clothing.
I put the most information and details I can and envision for the drawing.
At this point everything can still change and evolve.
It is for the client and/or me to understand and get a first impression.
I can also look into the color palette at this stage.

#2

Lineart

Once the sketch is approved by the client and/or me, I start the lineart.
I can do a couple rounds of lineart before being satisfied.
The first round is to get the shapes right, the second to add depth to the lines, third is for details and the final round is for corrections.
I draw the subject first and then the background if there is one.

#3

Flat Color

The third step is flat color and sometimes minimal shading. I like starting with the face and skin, that way I can better prepare for the total rendering. At this point, I test colors and palettes to see which one works best and make adjustments if necessary. I often put a monochrome base under the flat color to organize my layers.

#4

Rendering

The final step is rendering and last touches/modifications. This is where I finish the background if there is one. I put lights and shadows, adjust the colors and make multiple revisions and checks to see if the drawing is missing anything. I make around 3-4 copies of the drawing and test different end results. When it's finally approved, the drawing is done! I add signature when I see fit and voilà!
